mr. olbermann, please stop

Keith Olbermann turned himself into a liberal journalist sometime in late-2004 after George Bush won re-election in a bitter fight for the White House (that being unless he undermined the system and cheated again). I was originally flattered by his style of journalism–which was frankly, leagues ahead of what anyone had seen on FOX News or CNN (then again, anything was better than the monotone approach of Paula Zahn and the hypocrisy, racism, sexism, and gullible approach of Bill O’Reilly)–but now I realize that Mr. Olbermann is misrepresenting the Democratic party, liberal base, and the liberal media.

He has turned what was a fact-check on the conservative media into an all-out firestorm against Mr. O’Reilly as both an individual and anchor. His refusal to end this obvious ratings-ploy that seems more like name-calling between two kindergarteners is tarnishing his reputation as a serious journalist. In the process, he is destroying his own network, MNSBC and its much more respectable parent, NBC News.

Also, his 10-minute “special comments” have transitioned from a smart, carefully-worded approach at exposing crooks and liars to an all-out attack that is baseless and undeserving. His recent special comment on Hillary Clinton’s RFK-assassination baffled me. I don’t agree with what Mrs. Clinton said, but it wasn’t newsworthy. His neverending rant didn’t focus on a particular issue, like how Katrina victims are still deprived of resources, or how the United States is going full speed ahead to the Olympics in Beijing despite China’s mistreatment of the people in Tibet and Darfur, but rather an unsignificant comment made by a candidate that was hardly worth discussing.

The liberal media’s reputation was spotless before Mr. Olbermann’s sudden transformation in late-2004. Much of it was known for quality reporting, researched content, and informative insight into the world of politics. These days, the liberal media is about attacking everyone who attacks them in sight, not coming up with solutions but rather assuming and coming to false conclusions, and not willing to compromise for the good of the people.

Isn’t that what we continue to accuse the conservative media of doing?

edit: I hope to make myself clear here. I am a DEMOCRAT. I stand for DEMOCRATS. BUT, I will speak out when one of our own misrepresents our base, our ideals, and our values. When it comes to the media, I stand for an UNBIASED media that is not opinionated on any subject. That way, we can all make our own VALID conclusions based on the FACTS.

  1. This post is obvious garbage.

The comment about “liberal media” means this was written by some right wing toady.

No one who is true Democrat uses the team “liberal media”.

If you clowns are going to scam, at least do a little research…

  3. Maybe thats why the ratings for the liberal news outlets are so low and Fox News is the no# 1 news on cable news! Can not keep bashing the country and expect anything different! I dis agree with you about Bill being racist or sexist and for you to say so makes you just as bad as Olbermann which you’re cutting down!

  4. What I meant by “liberal media” is simply that they are more prone to support liberal ideas. “Conservative media” means the same thing, except vice-versa. I support the “unbiased media”; that way, viewers can get the facts and afterward, make their own conclusions. Hence, I refer to the left and right sides of the media as appropriately “liberal” and “conservative”.

Conservatives find much of their news on television, but we (Democrats/liberals) find much of our information online.

  5. I realize Oreilly has become nothing more than a catch phrase for fellows of your ilk, but can you really point out any specific examples of racism from him?

Truth is Oreilly has moved closer to the middle in terms of analysis of the political parties. Its Olbermann who has gone off the deep end in terms of bias and frankly honesty, what is most disappointing is to watch good journalists like Fineman and Alter sink to the bottom of the barrel with him.

anything for a bit of ratings success. emphasis on “bit.”

I dont like Olbermann or Oreilly. And I give you credit for calling out Olbermann on some of his nonsense. But truly the Keith’s show is part news, part act. And it is obvious to me that even he doesnt know where the line is anymore.

  6. Well thanks for the question. I appreciate it and I’m glad to answer…

Mr. O’Reilly’s distortion of the actual truth and his refusal to understand the truth about different ethnicities, different communities, and different ideals reminds me, an African-American growing up today in this world, of what I’ve learned in the history books–people during much of the 20th century who misconceived different ethnic groups and their standings in society. I’m not one to blatantly call anybody a racist. I do carefully research my facts. I hope that clears it up for you!

As for ratings, I do agree with you that both Bill and Keith’s shows are fabricated as part of a ratings ploy. But both can hardly call themselves “fair and balanced” or even journalists anymore through their misinterpretation of the truth and their inability to talk about pertinent issues in this world.

  7. Given that you’re young and black, here’s something for you to ponder: why are you a democrat?

    Really. Why?

Are you proud of the results that the Democrats have delivered for the decades we’ve followed them? It’s an absolute tragedy that so many of us have come to rely on incompetent leaders that have delivered nothing more than crappy schools, low standards, and scapegoats. If you want to get pissed off and realize how the leaders of our community have failed us, take a look at the education and strength of family of black people fifty years ago versus today.

Results matter and the political and cultural leaders of the black community could not have failed more when it comes to delivering those results. In fact, the only thing that keeps the black community from succeeding like it should is its leadership in both the community and Washington. If I were one of the dwindling number of racist white hillbillies, the best I could do to keep blacks down would be to encourage them to be Democrats and rely on government rather than the individual.

Take my advice and think about it because you’re young, smart and the reality is that you have so much more potential than what the Democrats or leaders of the black community will lead you to believe.

Don’t be one of the sheep.

    Best of luck.

  8. First and foremost, both the Democratic and Republican parties are about government. The Republican party is not about the “individual” at any point in time.

Second of all, Democratic presidents have not been incompetent. They have made some obvious mistakes, but can’t that be said of each and every single President? Plus, if anyone is incompetent, it is surely George W. Bush. If you’ll remember, he turned a surplus into a deficit, brought us into a war for no reason, failed to help the Katrina victims. If that’s not incompetent, I don’t know what is.

You try to explain to me that the “black community” has only continued to bring down its people. The black community is not to fault for crappy schools, low standards, and scapegoats. For all three of those issues ongoing in many parts of America, government is to blame. When government is to blame, we need change. That change occurs in the White House. And that change WILL occur in the White House this November. Andrew, you BLAME the black community for ongoing issues. That’s shameful! Government is to blame.

Perhaps I can turn the tables and ask you a question, Andrew: why do you blame the black community and not government? Why do you continue to blame only Democrats? The issue that’s ongoing in government is not a Democratic or Republican problem–it’s a governmental problem.

It’s why we have someone running for President who is ready and willing to fight not for his party or his personal goals, but rather for his people.
