a younger perspective on va and natl. politics

In 2003, at the age of 10 years old, I became involved with the late-Georgette Kohler’s campaign, an attempt to dethrone Michael Frey. I also became seriously involved with the Gerry Connolly campaign. It just happened that 2003 was the first in a long-process to “turn Virginia blue”, which the Democrats are still working to do. My involvement locally prompted me to get involved nationally.

I aligned myself with the Howard Dean campaign locally, volunteering weekly at their Virginia headquarters in Falls Church, VA and eventually garnering the attention of the Washington Post, Washington Times, and CNN. When Dean dropped out, I still tried to remain involved, especially in the unsuccessful-James Socas campaign (an attempt to remove Frank Wolf from Congress).

In 2005, I became extremely involved in the Tim Kaine and Chuck Caputo campaigns, and both of them have become big Democratic figures in the state of Virginia following their successful elections. In 2006, we fought hard against Wolf and Tom Davis, but we still lost by double-margins. Even so, we elected Senator Jim Webb, a decorated Vietnam War-veteran who ran a distinctively positive campaign against a senator haunted by racial slurs he had made, which helped tilt the Senate in favor of the Democrats. At the same time, I formed the now-defunct Young Sully Democrats club, which garnered the attention of the Centreville Times and Centreview.

And in 2007, I helped the Gerry Connolly, Rex Simmons, and Dale Evans campaigns in order to help Virginia turn blue further. We won the school board in Northern Virginia, picked up the State Senate, and ran a good race against Hugo.

My name is Shane Grannum and I am now 15-years old, part of the Westfield High School graduating class of 2011. Besides politics, I’m a debater, runner, cellist, Summa Cum Laude-student, and all-around activist. I was also the President of my Freshman class from October 2007- June 2008.
